THE
ENVIRONMENT
The Visitor's Centre of La Luz is settled in the middle
of the Nature Reserve of El Valle, just 7 km away from
the city of Murcia.
The Reserve is an incomparable natural environment for
recreation and amusement, as well as being a source
of oxygen for the city and a popular place for the citizens
of Murcia. Its total surface is of 16,724 hectares.
In 1917 it was included in the National Catalogue of
Open Spaces and it is one of the protected places of
the region, a title that was conferred on it in 1992.
Nowadays, this nature reserve is proposed to join the
future Red Natura 2000 (European Network of Open Spaces).
Besides, wide areas of the park have been declared a
Special Area of Protected Birds (Zona Especial de Protección
de Aves) and a Place of Community Interest (Lugar de
Interés Comunitario), two European titles dedicated
to the protection of nature.
THE BUILDING
When
the Visitor's Centre was built and started working,
the town hall of Murcia showed its interest to harmonize
sustainable development, nature conservation and its
public use.
The main aim of this centre, inaugurated on the 21st
of December 2004, is to take advantage of the area's
natural and hereditary resources to turn it into an
important tourist destination.
The centre, designed by the architect Abelardo Yañez,
is settled in a modern and functional building with
a built surface of nearly 1000m2. Thanks to the materials
it is made with, it is completely integrated in the
landscape. As the building is settled in a place interesting
to visit, wherever you go, its exterior design looks
like a privileged observatory. Its interior design was
created following a route that reveals how interesting
the Reserve has always been. Space is divided into three
floors:
Ground Floor. Exhibition of the history and different
topics about the reserve.
First Floor. Audio/Visual Room and Coffee bar.
Second Floor. Viewpoints and an exhibition about
mountaineering.
PERMANENT
EXHIBITIONS
First
of all, the protected space of El Valle-Sierra de Carrascoy
and its natural resources can be seen globally and didactically
in a scale model. Then, the visitor will enter to the
exhibition, with three different topics: "The Valley
of the Iberians", "Soul's Recollection"
and "Heart's Rest".
The route throughout time and space starts in the Iberian
world, highlighting that human life started really soon
in this place. Then, it changes to the world of chapels,
nunneries and sanctuaries that mushroomed in caves and
crests in that area, and finally it shows how families
went to that place in order to rest in the summertime
EXHIBITION
ABOUT MOUNTAINEERING
On the second floor, the visitor will find a very interesting
space, dedicated fully to mountaineering.
There, he/she will be able to discover the history of
mountain climbing, from the first climbers to nowadays,
thanks to the main figures of this discipline. Murcia
has always been the home of magnificent climbers and
El Valle has been the place where they trained, as well
as the starting point of great achievements in climbing
at international level.
ACTIVITIES
The centre has a wide planning of leisure and culture
activities for the visitors with exhibitions, workshops,
activities for children, screenings, recitals, rambling
and nature, etc.
